About Me

I’m a recent graduate of the University of Texas at Arlington who decided that he wanted to learn more about the region know as South Asia. I’m pretty sarcastic and enjoy music, videography, photography but most of all, a good laugh...

You Kinda Get Perspective

Yesterday I went with my supervisor and some special visitors, who came from the US to see some of the slums our students live in. Uncle and Auntie wanted me to take pictures so that it could help the visitors tell the stories of the students by visually showing what day to day life is in the slums. The video would empress upon the workers and students who come to there camp why it's important to support this project. As we left I see most students that come in for tutoring and for the message. I would say I spend about 3 to 4 days a week with them so it really just broke my heart to see the conditions that they're living in.

As dusk turned into night we went house to house and we visited with various people. These houses came in all various sizes. Some had electricity others did not, yet the one common theme as that most house weren't even the size of an adequate bathroom in the state. One woman said that seven adults and three children lived in the house with her and the children sleep on the shelves on top. I have a 6 ft 6" wingspan and I'm pretty sure that I wouldn't be able to stretch my arms out. It just really gave you perspective on how life is here. As we went to other houses the situations seemed to mirror the other peoples problem and they could easily be angry with people filming and taking pictures of them but they were gracious and welcoming. They didn't have much yet they offered what they had. They even ask for us to lay hands on them and ask Father to help them.

Walking along narrow passages alleys cover with mud and sewage you could see the joy that people had when you talked to them or took a photograph of them. To show that you acknowledge their being and that you truly care to listen to their suffering and to ask Father to aid them. That's the reason I'm here. Not to collect a bunch of nominal possession that will be gone once they're out of style or shelf life expires. Not to live in a big fancy glass house and look down on people. I am here to be a servant of Father, to love like he loves and to share his love with others. I know that I'm truly blessed, as I truly don't have to worry about many of the things that the people in the slums have to worry about.

But, last night I really had trouble going to bed without looking into my bathroom and visualizing 7-10 people living in it. I can't do anything about there circumstances but I can do one thing. Tell their story.
